STD Q & A

What are STDs?

STDs are diseases and infections that you contract through sexual contact. Some of the most commonly reported STDs in the United States include:

  • HPV (human papillomavirus)
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Herpes
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis

In addition to vaginal intercourse, partners can pass STDs through oral intercourse, anal intercourse, and genital touching. If you’re sexually active, you’re at risk of contracting an STD, especially if you don’t use protection, like condoms.

How can I tell if I’ve contracted an STD?

Some STDs present noticeable symptoms, some present mild symptoms, and still others present none. Also, STD symptoms can be very general. Some such symptoms include:

  • Unusual vaginal or penile discharge
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Pain and burning when you urinate
  • Itching, burning, pain, and/or swelling in your anus, vulva, or penis
  • Fatigue, body aches, swollen glands, fever, or other flu-like symptoms
  • Bumps or sores around your buttocks, thighs, or genitals

Because STD symptoms are varied and often nonexistent, the only way to know for sure whether you’ve contracted any is by getting tested.

How often should you get tested for STDs?

How often you should get STD testing depends on your sex life and your health history. For example:

Sexually active gay and bisexual men

Sexually active gay and bisexual men should schedule chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis testing at least once a year. If you have multiple sex partners, they should get tested every three to six months.

Sexually active women under 25

Anyone in this category should get tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia once a year. In addition, women older than 25 who have new or multiple sex partners should also get tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia once a year.

Men aged 13 to 64

All sexually active boys and men between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested for HIV once, and get tested for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis yearly.

Pregnant women

Pregnant women should be tested for syphilis, hepatitis B, and HIV at the beginning of pregnancy.

Also, if you engage in unsafe sex practices, or you share needles to inject drugs, you should get tested for HIV at least once a year.

STD testing is quick and easy, and it can save you and your partner or partners a great deal of stress. If you’re ready to take responsibility for your health and wellness, schedule your STD test with the kind team at Apex Medical Professionals today.
