Essential Women’s Health Screenings You Shouldn’t Ignore to Empower Your Long Term Wellness

Taking charge of your health starts long before you feel sick. Preventive screenings help find potential issues early, when they are easiest to treat, giving you peace of mind and control over your future. By staying proactive, you can protect your long-term wellness and address minor concerns before they develop into chronic conditions.

At Apex Medical Professionals in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, Walid E. Elkhalili, MD, and our team provide comprehensive women’s health services. We work closely with you to understand your unique risks and create a personalized screening schedule.

Why preventive screenings are changing

Medical guidelines evolve as we learn more about disease patterns and how they affect different age groups. Recently, public health authorities lowered the starting ages for several critical screenings to protect younger adults. These updates reflect a growing effort to catch diseases early and improve overall health outcomes across the country.

For example, in 2024, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force officially lowered the recommended starting age for biennial breast cancer mammograms to 40. Staying on top of these updates ensures you get the right care at the right time.

Three essential screenings for your wellness checklist

We offer routine well women exams to make preventive care simple and accessible. Here are three critical screenings you should discuss with our team during your next visit. Each of these tests plays a vital role in identifying risks and keeping your health on track.

Mammograms for breast health

Mammograms are specialized imaging tests used to detect breast changes before they can be felt during a physical exam. Scheduling your first mammogram at the recommended age of 40 is key to protecting your long-term health. Regular mammograms can identify abnormalities years before physical symptoms appear, making treatment much more successful.

Pap smears and HPV testing

A routine Pap smear is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer because the test can find precancerous cells early. Experts recommend a test every three years from ages 21 to 30, then every five years until you are 65. Although Pap smears have not been recommended after that if you have no history of suspicious test results or cancer, 20% of American women with cervical cancer are diagnosed after 65.

Colorectal cancer screenings

Colorectal cancer screenings are recommended to start at age 45 for average-risk adults. The age has been lowered from 50 because of a significant rise in cases among younger people.
